Saline Reads and Fishy recalls
Have been trying to read "Life of Pi" for over 2 months now. It's pretty boring so far. I'm on page 189, and it is not getting better... so what the hell is this guy doing trying to outwit a tiger in the middle of the Pacific ocean on a lifeboat? I don't much care for descriptions of a hyena eating a zebra alive on the lifeboat either .... what with ripping its stomach open and munching on its intestines. Yuck! I thought that The Kite Runner was gruesome in its own manner, and I certainly wasn't looking forward to imagining incapacitated animals being eaten alive by hungrier ones.
Whatever happened to all the pleasant books? We need more vegetarian authors methinks :)
Having said all that, this reminds of the time a friend and I took a boat ride and went about 5 km into the Arabian sea off the coast of Trivandrum. Mighty spendid! The fisherman who took us out there insisted on me holding a line ... sure enough, those were luckier days and the poor fish took the bait in less than a couple of minutes. I was applauded for my dumb luck and I guess in some ways the misfortune of the fish. As a pious vegetarian I requested the fisherman to throw the fish back into the water but he said something about it bringing him bad luck. I debated arguing with him, but I didn't fancy a 5KM swim back to the shore.
It was an interesting day, as I recall. The fisherman and his mates pushed the motor boat out into the water and alongwith my friend, and myself almost six or seven of the fisherman's friends got into the boat. I'm not happy with crowding at the best of times, and my visions of quietude and solace on the water was busted immediately. When we asked the fisherman why we had so many people come in for the ride, he simply said that it would take all those people to overturn the boat if it did capsize. Again, I don't remember arguing with him.
As Chris de Burg says in one of his songs
"Don't pay the ferryman,
Don't even fix a price
Don't pay the ferryman
Until he gets you to the other side"
:)
All said and done, the experience of sitting on a boat while far into the sea ... being able to reach down and touch the water..... to be able to look into a depth of several meters into the azure blue is a stunning experience. The farther you go, the more gentle the waves, the clearer the water, and as for the bigger picture .... well, thats simply overpowering.

Pi gave me dry heaves. I fixated on the grossness and completely missed the bigger picture :).
Kite Runner made me sad, but I couldn't stop reading. His prose is so beautiful...
spa, do you swim? :)
new..........
Teju: whats a 'dry heave'? Agree on Kite Runner ... Hosseini is a gifted writer
how do you post a pic to your blog? Is webshots the only way to do it?
and ...how do align the pic to the center? by default it is aligned towards the left...
I actually liked Life of Pi, though it probably didn't deserve a Booker.
I enjoyed bits and pieces of Kite Runner, but overall, I think it's rather overrated. Far too filmy and too many coincidences for my taste. Almost a touch dishonest, I thought.
A somewhat similar book, not so well known, but infinitely better is "I Saw Ramallah", by Mourid Barghouti. This one is autobiographical and about Palestine. There are some passages in there that really soar, and most of all, it reads far more honest than A Kite Runner.
arun dude... good to hear from you again .... did u check out Ch22?
also is the ramallah book any more sanguine? i dont have the stomach for any more sad stories
Yeah, read Chapter 21. Enjoyed it. Good read... Do you have a 22 up too? It's not on the blog, at least.
My thoughts race back to the sight of the Sunflower company, where a steel tumbler was attached to the water filter with a metal chain. Capt had been a soldier indeed to have lasted the years that he did.
That brought a big broad smile on my face!!
And that stuff about Captain shouting at that Indian call center person, man, must have been real funny to have seen it live!!
Btw, where's Captain now? Mail/msg me his number.
Oh, about I saw Ramallah. I don't remember how it ended, but it's more optimistic than Kite Runner, though there are sad things in there too.
One of the things I remember about it is that though it was a Palestinian perspective, it was not an anti-Israel monologue. A book of hope, almost.
Amazon may give you some more info, I suppose.
you have been ignoring me for a long time now... alright..
Goodbye and Goodluck..
new........
can you kindly tell me what the starting date of your sitemeter count is?
why do you need to know that?
to calculate average traffic per month and compare the same with certain other bloggers'......statistics and all that.... no harm intended ...dont worry...
who wants to know?
I WANT TO KNOW!!! Now will you please tell me??

Thank you for your benevolence.
Now in sitemeter, if you go to manager tab, and then go to starting count link on the left, you will see the starting date and starting count. If you can tell me the exact date and count there, you will make me very happy.
If I am asking for too much, then forget it. (But I think I deserve a response for flattering you sooo muchh in the last few months and being a big fan of yours)
